The Potential Harm Of Conservative Christians (The Atheist Experience #583)

DOMINIONISM describes, in several distinct ways, a tendency among some conservative politically-active Christians, especially in the United States of America, to seek influence or control over secular civil government through political action – aiming either at a nation governed by Christians, or a nation governed by a conservative Christian understanding of biblical law. The use and application of this terminology is a matter of controversy.

CHRISTIAN RECONSTRUCTIONSIM is a religious and theological movement within Protestant Christianity that calls for Christians to put their faith into action in all areas of life. The beliefs characteristic of Christian Reconstructionism include:

1. Calvinism, for its description individual spiritual regeneration by the Holy Spirit that is required to change people on a personal level before any positive cultural changes can occur,
2. Theonomy applying the general principles of Old Testament and New Testament Law to the corresponding family, church and civil governments (compare with theocracy); opposed to church-state separation of any kind,
3. Postmillennialism, the Christian eschatological belief that God’s kingdom began at the first coming of Jesus Christ, and will advance progressively throughout history until it fills the whole earth through conversion to the Christian faith and worldview,
4. The presuppositional apologetics of Cornelius Van Til
5. Decentralized political order resulting in minimal state power and laissez-faire economics.

What is The Atheist Experience?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas, geared at an atheist and non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

    Science boils down …
Science boils down to facts, logical argument, and rationality.

Prove a fact wrong and you’ve proven a scientific theory wrong. Show a flaw in the argument and you’ve proven a scientific theory wrong.

If you believe in the magic sky fairy you can keep redefining your beliefs whenever contradictions are shown.

Facts. Logic. Rational argument. You theists just can’t do that because you believe in the invisible pink unicorn.

Fanatics are far more militant than common sane people, because common sane people are more preoccupied with improoving family financial, health, public services, child education etc, for future generation and civilization. Fanatics doesn’t believe in the future, only thing they believe is the past and the end. So why bother educate children? Die as worshiper and everything will turns out just fine for them … Thats why we keep seing idiot legislation all over the world

    To be an Atheist …
To be an Atheist needs really big things: ability and willingness to responsible about him/herself; No God outthere to tell you what to do means you must contemplate everything by your self–i believe this kindof feeling that scares lots of ppl to get out of the box, to face reality. But, whats real is real. No superficial idea will “save” ppl from being alive. One must fully awake and embraces self conciousness as guide to his/her own truth.

    In one study, …
In one study, people quite ill were randomly broken into three groups, one who wouldn’t be prayed for and knew it, one who didn’t know whether or not they’d be prayed for (but they would be prayed for)and a 3rd group that knew that they’d be prayed for. There was no difference in medical progress between the first two groups but the medical condition worsened for the group that knew they were being prayed for. Knowing you’re being prayed for allows you to abandon your natural self-healing powers

“I have faith in my fellow man to do the right thing, but if I were to go by pure data then my faith would rule out my trust in minorities, who statistically are more likely to be criminals. But I choose to have faith that they are decent people.”

    This…is a bit skewed.

JmkLcAeJsm, well yea your right kinda; but all blind faith (seems) to divide religion (just pick ie; christianity, islam, hinduism) which, over time, feeds into the growth of all the “particular propositons of theism”

    To argue against …
To argue against science is idiotic, I think religion espicially religious leaders need to stay away from confronting scientists on “religous science.”

    This is a good discussion.

    I absolutley agree, …
I absolutley agree, there is no intrinsic harm in faith. It is the particular propositions of theism that I object to, and the fact that it makes unsupportable truth claims.

Your point about minorities is a strong on!

I am not sure that …
I am not sure that I am looking for true or untrue religious ideas, again I do no view religion as Science.

As far as faith goes I think there is virtue in having faith in something, having a belief that is not backed by quanitative data. I have faith in my fellow man to do the right thing, but if I were to go by pure data then my faith would rule out my trust in minorities, who statistically are more likely to be criminals. But I choose to have faith that they are decent people.

    It is not pointless …
It is not pointless. Religion is not a valid way of seeking truth, there is no way of discriminating between true and untrue religious ideas.

And why would you pray, given the double blind studies that demonstrate it wouldn’t work?

    Thats an …
Thats an interesting point. I still think religion reenforces those ethics. So long as you seperate the abusers and radicals the tenets are very good.

I think it is pointless to debate Religion vs Science as I feel they are seperate.

If I was very ill I would pray for help from God, and I would pray for a GOOD Doctor!

    Well, try and look …
Well, try and look past your perception of how we shound and concentrate on what we’re actually saying.

Religion no more produced a code of ethical behaviour than geese produce a flying v, religion reflects our ethics, and ethics are emergent.

That may be but you …
That may be but you guys are coming off a little creepy, the religous extreme is very creepy – but you guys sound a little creepy.

I thin its also tough to find moral values in Science. The one thing I’ll give religion is that it produced a code of ethical behavior. Obviously most people do not stick to that code – but it is there as a guide.

Seems, but isn’t, because we don’t want to use coercion. We’re pretty certain we’re right, and the more we put our ideas out there, the more religious ones will whither and die.

“Is it OK for a religous person to think that God created evolution?”

People are entitled to believe what they want, but the truth is, God is becoming more and more redundant as we continue to find explanations for things without recourse to the supernatural.

God is never a satisfying explanation – as you can’t explain a thing by one that is even more unjustified and unexplained.

Why do you need to …
Why do you need to eliminate religion? I think you can seperate Science and Religion don’t you? Or do think that the two are intertwined. Is it OK for a religous person to think that God created evolution? Instead of eliminating why not find some common ground.

It seems a little Dictatorish to want to eliminate some ones beliefs.

“Explaining basic science is like pulling teeth with them.”

I think it is the FEAR programming they pound into the innocent children!
I know FEAR was the first thing I felt when the light went on and I was 53! LOL Also, most of them are scared shitless of dying, and need to feel they are going someplace besides the ground.
For myself, I refuse to worship anything that condones the murder of little children or anyone else for that matter! That bible god is an insane, mass murdering cur.
