What is The Atheist Experience?

The Atheist Experience is a weekly cable access television show in Austin, Texas, geared at an atheist and non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin (ACA), a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.

    The bible names …
The bible names places that exist and some events that happened. That does not mean the rest is true. It even makes many mistakes, like who ruled when jesus was born?

What kind of things did you heal yourself from? Did you take your grandfather to see an Optometrist? I’m sure they would have had a lot of tests for him.

    How do you know …
How do you know what you felt was god?

The gospels are anonymous. They were not written by eye witnesses either. Since it was written long after, how do you kow they are correct?

Those are some of the morals. What does the bible teach about rape? Not something that is enforced anywhere thankfully. I also disagree about placing your family second behind god.

    People passing out …
People passing out and praying in tongues and NOT BEING ABLE to wake them up, I myself was Agnostic when God gave me the gift of tongues.
I, personally, haven’t performed anything more than a few faith healings on my own body, but I know my faith will increase and I’ll do much, much more.

    What’s wrong with …
    What’s wrong with the morals?
Turn the other cheek, bless those who curse you, give without expecting anything in return, don’t judge anyone. Those all sound like sound morals to me.

The historical factuality of the Gospels and the Old Testament portraying actual events that occurred (the Reign of David, Solomon, Nebuchadnezzar, Jesus’ teachings and lifestyle, etc.).

I’ve seen healings, my grandfather had partial blindness healed, I’ve seen baptisms of the Holy Spirit….

    God revealed …
God revealed Himself to me by baptizing me in the Holy Spirit (which is a fancy way of saying poured out His love on me). I felt this uncontrollable joy in my heart, I can’t really describe it, then I started to pray in tongues. *Keep in mind, i was Agnostic at this time*

Reading the Gospels gives us the story of Jesus’ life. And I know this because the Bible has over 40 authors, but we’ll narrow it down to the New Testament. All the different authors show different prophecies fulfilled byHim

    2. The bible is …
    2. The bible is below my standard of morals, though this is a personal opinion and does not make something true or false.

    3. What historical factuality is that?

    4. What miracles have you seen? Which can you perform?

    How did god reveal …
How did god reveal himself to you?

There’s no way for you to know if he had a huge following. Not one person wrote about him while he was alive. Right now, in the areas where he supposedly lived, christianity is not even the main religion.

    1. Prophecies would be reliable if they could be verified. How do you know someone didn’t read about an old testament prophecy and just say jesus fulfilled it?

  8. By nothingexplosion on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    I would say the …
I would say the Bible is reliable because of [1] the fulfillment of Biblical prophecies, [2] the upstanding morality it demands, [3] The historical factuality of it, and [4] Jesus gave us authority to do Miracles in His name and I’ve seen and heard testimonies of MANY who’ve been healed through faith and prayer in Jesus’ name.

    Haha, sorry to …
    Haha, sorry to disappoint you.

Exactly, that’s why you need faith. For instance, when I became a Christian, I actually recieved the Holy Spirit PRIOR to my conversion, because I acted on faith and began to pray and God revealed Himself to me.

Many of them did believe in Him. He had a HUGE following around Israel and Judea. Christianity (as far as I know) is the most widely practiced religion in the world. Islam is the fastest growing but Christianity still has the most followers.

    About authority I …
About authority I mean this. You have different religions texts. Why do you say the bible is true but not the others. You said that you can’t believe the other religions, but what you feel does not equal truth. I don’t like the bible but I could be wrong. Your opinion does not equal truth just like mine doesn’t.

So my question is; Why is the bible reliable but not the text of other religions?

Well you got me. I …
Well you got me. I was expecting you to give the virgin birth one and then I would have got you.

Why would someone who does not believe in something, pray to that thing?

If the people who were around when jesus supposedly came don’t believe in him why do you?

  12. By nothingexplosion on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    Ok, one prophecy …
Ok, one prophecy was that the Messiah would be betrayed by a friend (Psalm 41:9). Jesus was betrayed by a Disciple, Judas Iscariot (John 13:18, 21)

That’s not true. Praying without knowing Him is an act of faith which God will reward. If you’ll notice at the end of almost every Christian TV show the host asks the viewers to say the prayer of Salvation, this doesn’t require you to be a Christian, on the contrary, it requires you to want to know God.

    You share my …
You share my bafflement my friend. I have no idea why Jews reject Christ.
Why does the Bible have more authority? I dont understand what you mean?

It’s not silly at all. It does make sense.

    I cant explain the …
I cant explain the situation for everybody, but think of the vulcans

I know that pointing to sci-fi may seem silly, but the basics of their system are based in the idea that if logic/reason rules your life, you have an easier time accepting the harsh realities of life and dealing with them

The key to good judgement is not to go with your first emotion. Maybe not everybody has the ability to step back, but not letting emotions rule you is the path to reason
    Maybe that makes sense?

    Well, I just …
Well, I just commented to say that I see your point, but I can see how it can happen.

Odd question…I know alot of Atheists that say that they are not emotional people. Is that common?
(I myself am not a ‘true atheist’)

  17. By waltermh111 on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    I just wanted to …
I just wanted to comment to say that I dont disagree with you honestly.

I am not an emotional person so its hard to imagine a person going to such an extreme, but I have seen it enough times in life that it shouldnt be so stunning.
I dont mean I have seen conversions, but I have seen people take major steps to bring comfort to their troubled lives.

  18. By 15thnametried on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    But again I throw …
But again I throw in the fact that it could be wishful thinking instead of real belief. Who really knows what another person truely feels or believes.

  19. By 15thnametried on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    I didn’t mean to …
I didn’t mean to say that it was logical. LOL
But I do think that you could go from not believing without evidence to believing. The need for comfort is a very strong need and fear is a very strong force. If someone fears death enough, hurts bad enough over the loss of a loved one, or has to deal with the effects of a tragic accident or a murder or rape, etc., I can see how the need for comfort could be strong enough to put aside the logic and decide to believe in a higher power or heaven.

    The question is, …
The question is, did the person calling himself an atheist simply think he was an atheist because he never thought much about the god idea?
Did he come to see the evidence that there was no god, think about it, denounce him, then decide later to dismiss all that evidence for emotional comfort?

If you never think about the god idea past admitting that you dont care, you cant say your an atheist, because at worst you denied caring about the issue.
I would have to see a convert to understand truly

  21. By waltermh111 on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    Actually, its never …
Actually, its never logical when people believe in god.

And we all know the various reasons people believe in god.
You can be an agnostic and switch, but atheism is not believing without evidence.
Since no evidence is ever given for these transitions it should be concluded that these converts dont truly believe in the god but are playing it safe hoping they can fake it to comfort themselves.
Or they have always had the belief that anything is possible in which case they are agnostic.

Can you give me an …
Can you give me an example of one prophecy that was fulfilled?

If you seek god through prayer, you have already decided he exists and I’m sure you will make yourself think you found him that way.

  23. By locouru on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    So you have a …
So you have a preference to one religion but you did not say why the bible has more authority. The way you don’t like what other religions teach, I don’t like what the bible teaches. But that is a personal decision. It has nothing to do with fact. Any one religion could be true, or none. Why Chritianity and not the others?

You used prophecy as evidence. If EVERY ONE of the old testament prophecies were fulfilled, why are the jewish not christians?

  24. By nothingexplosion on Jan 30, 2009 | Reply

    Judaism: Jesus …
Judaism: Jesus fulfilled EVERY ONE of the messianic prophecies of the Old Testament. CHRISTIAN BIBLE: Of all the prophecies made in the Bible, they’re all coming true. Israel was made a nation again, Jesus’s prophecies of the signs of end times are all coming true.
But seek God through prayer and you’ll see that the Bible is factual.

    Hindu Bible: Do I …
Hindu Bible: Do I really need to argue against it? Polytheism is silly. The gods of Hinduism require constant appeasement and will never grant blessings without first being offered sacrifices of self mutilation or something of the sort. BUDDHISM: Says there is no God, but that you’re reincarnated after life (by what?) until you reach the ultimate state of being (nirvanna), but there’s nothing to say you’ve reached nirvanna, you essentially trust in nothing to give you everything.
