They simply have to be content with belittling, name-calling, condescending remarks and attempted character assassinations. I come from a divided community, Ireland. There was( is) much religious hatred between catholic and protestant. I have a Professor, David McConnell, who is from the protestant christian science tradition. As a geneticist he has divorced religion but as a human he retains his intolerance of others beliefs. For instance, if his student expressed a belief in God during one of his free discussions in his Philosophy/Science and Ethics course that student would be a marked man as to express belief in God was to establish your ignorance in his eyes. He doesn't consciously realise this and the image he perceives of himself is very much of liberalism and tolerance...yet he is as intolerant of religious people as his protestant ancestors were of catholic beliefs.
