and i think what … and i think what hedges, and others, define god as, is just plain stupid. its nothing useful. you may as well be allowed to label your shoe, or anxiety, or math, as “god”. what is the point of a non-personal god which has such a definition. “peace is god” well, then sure. but now what is your point? you have faith in something that is already defined as something literal and real? good job. gold star. way to sit on the fence in such a way that you legitimize crazy beliefs and still not be wrong
So far these two … So far these two are debating completely different things. Harris criticizes conventional religious beliefs, yet Hedges defines religion differently than what the conventionsl beliefs are. His beliefs are more spirituality than dogmatic religion and, as the moderator pointed out, are actually not too incompatible with atheism.
hey stop callling … hey stop callling ppl who disagree with harris, intellectual dwarfs. his arguments are classical reductionist arguments which are always generally false when overextended. also society and its flow, is not a scientific subject that you can confine in the constraints of logically rigorous theory. lot of it is expereience. in that regards harris is a complete moron.
Many intellectual … Many intellectual dwarfs writing their opinions here. Please READ THE TOPIC OF THE VIDEO. Harris is extremely aware of the consequences of religious belief.
hedges has seen … hedges has seen killing, hatred, murder.harris is the product of a lazy elitist bourgeoise society, which hasnt seen depravation, denial, hunger or terrorism.such ppl are welcome to have opinions, but its like having an opinion about cancer when you dont have it.he doesnt realise if you are palestinain whose family was kiled, the only hope that you get is from this abstract concept called god.i dont belive in god,but i can see its role in ppl’s lives, who have been pushed to the edge.
Hedges seems to be … Hedges seems to be defining his own religion and defending it as infinitely good. He is not taking into account the people that believe the scriptures.
So what if its just … So what if its just Harris’ opinion? Its a good opinion that makes logical sense. I wouldn’t care if it was some random hobo saying it.
Now I don’t know what Hedges has done previously in his life and I don’t really care. I’m just saying I wasn’t impressed by his performance/logic here and thats really all that counts.
Are you kidding me? … Are you kidding me? Sam Harris wrote some books, other than that he is just talking out of his ass, it’s all his opinion. Hedges has been all over the place, studied people at there best and worst. He also studied Theology. He knows what he is talking about. Harris is just saying what you want to hear, however intellectually shallow and off the mark it may be.
I agree. But you … I agree. But you have a bunch of gullible people here, just like the gullible masses enchanted by the Christian Fundamentalists, who are only watching this to get their daily dose of New Atheism, because Harris tells them what they want to hear. They ignore rationality, and the far more intellectual and realistic view presented by Chris Hedges, because it completely destroys idiots like Sam Harris from the onset.
Hedges point on … Hedges point on tribalism is spot and is obvious with everything not just religion.
Why dont people just listen with an open mind as both men raise great points.
Hedges DID avoid … Hedges DID avoid the argument. His speech was eloquent and smart. BUT he is an idealist and ignores every single bad part that comes directly from believing in one of these religions. Chris is smart and could really contribute but he needs to be much more specific.
This kind of makes … This kind of makes me sad. I like both Sam Harris and Chris Hedges. I have read both of their books, and I reccomend them both. I like debates where the opponent is someone I dislike.
